Once the canals are filled, a permanent restoration, such as a crown, filling, or bridge, is placed over the tooth. This restoration restores the tooth's structure, function, and aesthetics.

Restoring the Tooth

Step 4

The dentist or endodontist will use a biocompatible material, such as gutta-percha, to fill the canals. This material seals the canals and prevents further contamination.

Filling the Canals

Step 3

The dentist or endodontist will use specialized instruments to carefully clean the pulp chamber and canals. This process removes any infected or damaged tissue, including the nerves and blood vessels.

Cleaning the Pulp

Step 2

The dentist or endodontist will use a drill to create a small opening in the crown of the tooth. This opening allows the dentist or endodontist to access the pulp chamber.

Opening the Tooth

Step 1

Root canal treatment is a procedure to clean out and fill an infected or inflamed pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause problems such as tooth pain, sensitivity, and swelling.

Root canal treatment addresses these problems by cleaning out the infected or inflamed pulp and filling the tooth with a new filling material or crown to help protect it.
